Daily Harvest joins the portfolio

Chobani is acquiring Daily Harvest, adding plant-based meals and snacks to its food business. Financial terms have not been disclosed. Daily Harvest began delivering food directly to customers about a decade before the transaction. Its products are now sold online and in retail stores. Chobani plans to use its manufacturing operations, distribution network and retail relationships to bring the brand to more households across the United States.

Daily Harvest's assortment includes organic smoothies, breakfast bowls, protein powders and frozen meals. Pasta and vegetable dishes are also part of its range. The purchase gives Chobani its first presence in supermarket frozen-food departments, alongside its established business in the dairy aisle. The companies described wider access to food made with real ingredients as a shared ambition.

From yogurt to additional food categories

Hamdi Ulukaya founded Chobani in 2005 after buying a yogurt factory in New Berlin, New York, with a small business loan. He brought back five employees from the old operation. The first Chobani yogurt reached shops in 2007. Ulukaya had moved to the United States in 1994 and previously established a feta-cheese business in Johnstown, New York.

Chobani entered the oatmilk and dairy coffee-creamer categories in 2019. In 2023, it bought Philadelphia-based coffee roaster La Colombe for $900 million. La Colombe brought ready-to-drink coffee and a café business into the portfolio. By the first quarter of 2024, its coffee was served at 32 cafés, and its production operations included facilities in Norton Shores, Michigan.

Manufacturing and product development

Chobani's manufacturing network developed beyond its original New York plant with the opening of a second yogurt factory in Twin Falls, Idaho, in December 2012. The company invested $450 million in that operation. A further 70,000-square-foot expansion, unveiled in June 2019, housed its Global Research & Development Center and shared employee facilities. The company's earlier production and development investments included:

  • The New Berlin factory purchased in 2005.
  • The Twin Falls yogurt plant opened in 2012.
  • A global research and development center in the 2019 Twin Falls expansion.

Chobani also maintained a New Jersey laboratory with microbiologists, molecular biologists and biochemists. Its New York City teams covered functions including marketing, communications, finance, logistics and information technology. The planned use of Chobani's manufacturing and distribution capabilities for Daily Harvest follows these earlier investments in production and product development.
